Copyright.gov (Recordation)

OVERVIEW

The Library of Congress contracted a few agencies in order to modernize their process when receiving and processing Bills from the House or Senate.

PROBLEM

Copyright's search mechanism was outdated and needed a serious upgrade. Having worked on Recordation first gave me a good understanding of how to approach this project.

My role here is to be the support UX Designer. A UX Designer from the Library of Congress performed as the Lead UX Designer. I worked directly with him as well as the rest of the UX Design team at the Library of Congress.

THE SOLUTION

The goal here was to bring their search mechanism to the 21st century, so to speak. In order to achieve this, we had to redo their filtering, work on advanced search, etc.

I was given the task of working on the mobile version, which was my first time creating a mobile version on that scale. We performed numerous usability testings with users on all levels (i.e., power users, researchers, etc.), card sorting so that we would know the hierarchy of all elements. Basically, people who used the platform but had different skill sets so that we could tackle the problems from all angles. It was interesting performing usability tests with the filter and getting different results than we had imagined originally. Some things you take for granted that every user will know, but there are always surprises. Hence why it's so important to perform these usability tests.

TIMELINE

We were given about a year to work on this project before going to phase 2. We started working on the desktop versions and then moved on to the mobile version.

RESULTS

The design was ahead of the development (which was expected). The Product Owners really liked what we came up with and were ready to start phase 2.

REFLECTION

This highlights my experience here, as I had the chance to experience the empathetic mindset and process of a UX designer. As a designer who has never worked together with such a group prior to this opportunity, all you need is empathy, curiosity, and constant iteration to design an experience that can get these users motivated in their workflow again. With these elements, I've learned you can create meaningful relationships with your users that can ultimately shape the end result of our product into an unimaginable scale.

I am absolutely grateful for this opportunity and for growing with such a talented team. With their guidance, patience, and open-mindset towards design, I don't think either the product or my journey as a designer would be where it is right now.
